What are the benefits of taking MSM?

What are the benefits of taking MSM?

It would be difficult to find a person who can not benefit from taking MSM. MSM is an especially bersatile supplement, used for its anti inflammatory effects and to reduce acidity in the body, treat gastrointestinal disorders (stomach and colon conditions) and constipation, increase circulation and promote connective tissue health. The most popular and effective applications of MSM are in treating skin problems, asthma, allergies and arthritis.
MSM demonstrates a very positive effect on skin problems such as psoriasis . . because sulfur is a major ingredient of important amino acids - the building blocks of protein - and proteins provide the structural raw materials of muscles, bones, teeth, blood, brains, skin, and the other organs of the body, a lack of sulfur in our diet may cause moderate to severe health problems involving these bodily structures. There have been many people report that taking MSM cleared up their acne.
MSM is useful in treating asthma by regulating the fluid that covers the airway surface of the lungs, and by preventing an inflammatory response. Asthma afflicts so many people that medical authorities describe is as an epidemic. About 15 million Americans suffer with the condition and 5,000 die each year. The American Lung Association estimates that there are 3.7 million youngsters with asthma, an increase of 200 percent over the past twenty years.
Airborne allergies to pollen, mold, animal dander, and dust mites are often involved in asthma and can exacerbate the condition. Food allergies and chemical sensitivites may also by contributing factors.
With the addition of MSM, a reduction of the requirement for cortisone to the extent that the afflicted person no longer experiences any of the adverse side effects from the drugs. MSM may not be able to completely control asthma, but it will help an asthmatic person reduce the dosage of drugs needed to breathe better.
You are considered allergic if you have an adverse reaction to a substance, such as food, chemicals, pollen, dust and other elements in the environment, that is normally harmless to most people.
Listing symptoms is probably not necessary because most of us know when we have allergies. But some of the symptoms are watery eyes, stuffy head (sinuses), headaches, sneezing, fatique, coughing, skin rashes, mood and behavior changes and muscular aches and pains.
According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, allergies are among the major causes of illness and disability in the United States. 40 to 50 million Americans are believed to be affected by some type of allergies.
We have all tried prescription and over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines to neutralize the bodys respones. Such medicines can cause side effects, including the production of more histamines by the body.
Other modalities used in the treatment of allergies are herbs, vitamins and homeopathic remedies. These may include herbal combinations, single herbs such as Freeze Dried Nettles, homeopathic remedies like Allium Cepa and combinations produced by many companies, and vitamins such as Vitamin C, Vitamin B-5 and Quercitin.
(I have been in the natural health industry for 20 years, and have used most of the natural remedies in the herbal, homeopathic and vitamin catagories to alleviate my allergies. My favorite was Freeze Dried Nettles, Vitamin C, Vitamin B-5, along with homeopathic combinations by Nova or Bio-Allers. I also developed a skin allergy, being allergic to my own persperation. As you have done, I lived with my alleries.
MSM completely took away my allergy symptoms of runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and cleared up my skin problems.)
Lets take a closer look at MSM for allergies.
In the book The Miracle of MSM, the authors state that the ...impact of MSM on pollen allergies is so superb in so many cases that it just might be the best remedy since the advent of antihistamines a half-century ago.
In our health store we have customers telling us that they are having as good or better results with MSM than with antihistamines. It works for people of all ages, with no side effects. You cannot be allergic to MSM.
In many cases, improvement on allergy symptoms comes rapidley, within a day or two, even for people suffering from allergies for years. The important aspect of taking MSM is to continue taking MSM on a daily basis, so that when allergy season comes around you do not succomb to the allergy response. In fact, why not be like me and experience no allergic response to environmental triggers.
MSM(sulfur) is important is alleviating allergies by detoxifying the cells and eliminating free radicals. An allergic response happens when the immune system reacts to substances called allergens, which are foreign bodies in the system. MSM helps stabilize cell walls and increase their permeability and elasticity, allowing them to flush out toxins and foreign bodies, including allergens.
MSM may be what people experiencing pain in the body have been waiting for. MSM has proven to give significant pain relief in a majority of cases, perhaps 70 percent, in the treatment of many patients with a variety of painful conditions at Oregon Health Sciences Universities DMSO Clinic. There is, of course, no substance that works in every case. MSM is no exception.
Pain comes in many different labels - Severe accident-related pain - degenerative arthritis - rheumatoid arthritis - headaches - muscle soreness - fibromyalgia - back pain - tendinitis - bursitis - carpal tunnil syndrome - athletic strains and sprains - cold sores - shingles - TMJ - inflammatory bowel disorders - Bells palsey and Buergers diseases.
To fully understand the healing powers of MSM, check out from your local library or purchase the book The Miracle of MSM by Jacob, Lawrence and Zucker. This book will show you why MSM is for everyone, everyday, for the rest of your life. That is why I created The MSM Club so that you can purchase MSM at the lowest price and receive the purest MSM available in America.

What is MSM?

What is MSM?

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a naturally occurring compound that is a part of the normal sulfur cycle. It has its origins in the ocean, where microscopic plants and animals release dimethylsulfonium salts, which are then converted by the seawater to dimethylsulfide, or DMS. DMS is very volatile and quickly escapes into the atmosphere. In the presence of sunlightg and ozone, this DMS is changed into dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), sometimes called dimethylsulfone. Since MSM (and DMSO) are very water soluble, they return to earth with the rain, where they are absorbed and concentrated by the plants that we eat.
Organic sulfur is necessary for the proper function of the body’s skin, connective tissue, organ, and immune systems. Naturally occurring MSM is normally the body’s primary source of essential sulfur since MSM is found in most natural, unprocessed foods. However, any processing of food, as by heating or drying, essentially eliminates the biologically important methylsulfonylmethane. Sulfur, a required macronutrient, must be constantly replaced both for growth and healthy function of the body. Unless the diet consists largely of raw, unprossed foods, it is unlikely to contain adequate amounts of MSM. The MSM provided by the MSM Club is approximately 99.9% pure and contains approximately 34% organic sulfur in a readily bioavailable form.
Our MSM is a white, water soluble crystalline solid. It is not-toxic, non-allergenic and has a slightly bitter taste.

Why the body needs MSM?

Why the body needs MSM?

Sulfur is an essential component of various compounds and biochemical processes in the body, and is necessary for the synthesis of collagen (skin and joints), immunoglobulin ( immune response) and enzymes. In the body, sulfur:
* maintains cell membranes flexibility and permeability, promoting an efficient exchange of nutrients and waste products. When this system slows down, fluid around the cell is increased, the lymphatic system slows down, toxins build up and all sorts of degenerative disease develop.
* Ensures connective tissue health and the formation of collagen.
* Provides the body with raw materials needed to create new cells, to repair and replace damaged tissues and organs. As we age, this process speeds up.
* Figures into energy production, as a component of insulin and a prerequisite for normal carbohydrate metabolism.
The concentration of MSM is the body begins to decrease as we age, so deficiencies may occur in latter years. Sulfur deficiencies may occur in later years. Sulfur deficiencies are associated with brittle nails and hair, scar tissue, slow healing wounds, arthritis, acne or other skin disorders, depression, memory loss, gastrointestinal problems and immune disorders.

Why Consume MSM?

Why Consume MSM?

There are several reasons for taking MSM, beginning with the lack of sulfur in our food. Although sulfur (the mineral in methylsulfonylmethane or MSM as it is abbreviated) is an abundant element, scientists have found the depletion of minerals, including sulfur, from our soil and the processing used in food preparation have greatly reduced the amount of sulfur in our foods and therefore in our bodies.
MSM is most abundant in raw, unpasturized milk and can be found in lesser amounts in garlic, grains, raw meat, eggs & fish. It is also available in fresh, raw vegetables including broccoli, peppers, Brussels sprouts, onions, asparagus and cabbage.
However, its hard to get enough MSM from dietary sources alone. The above paragraph does not describe the average American diet, and because MSM is highly water soluble and evaporates, the nutrient is lost once food is cooked, steamed, smoked, or processed (the latter a better reflection of how most people eat).
Age is another factor in MSM deficiencies. MSM diminishes in our bodies with age. We can find MSM in all of us using either a blood sample or urine sample. But the MSM is lowered by eating too much processed food and growing older. We can change our eating habits, but tough to stop the aging process.
Almost everyone is deficient in the mineral sulfur, but with age the deficiency grows ever more pronounced.

Should I take any other Supplements with MSM?

Should I take any other Supplements with MSM?

I have not seen any studies showing that taking any other supplements with MSM will enhance the effectiveness of MSM. Nor have I read where any supplement combined with MSM has any extroidinary healing powers. Some people have combined Glucosomine Sulfate with MSM, but again I have not seen any studies that demonstrate why such a combination would work any better than MSM alone. Please send me any information on this subject. Until I see otherwise, Im staying with MSM.
As far as Vitamin C and other vitamin/mineral supplements, there is no evidence to suggest that these supplements enhance MSM. MSM does aid digestion and the intestinal tract, therefore, there may be better assmiliation of vitamins and minerals when MSM is taken.
I am a supporter of nutritional supplementation because we have a hard time getting nutrients from our food because the soil has been depleted of vital minerals, cooking and processing destroys nutrients and dare I say our diets are not all that good. Take your supplements (quality supplements are a must, there is a difference) and take your MSM.

How do I take it?

How do I take it?

We sell the powder because it is the most economical form of MSM. When you start putting it into capsules, you must pay for the capsules and the machinery and labor to put the MSM into capsules.
With the powder, just mix it with juice of your choice, stir and drink. I (Bob) have no problem mixing my MSM with water and drinking it down while taking my other supplements. But I like mixing it with orange juice. Some people find it bitter, but others like myself do not find it bitter at all.

How much MSM should I take each day?

Daily dosage of MSM will vary for each individual.

The quantity consumed on a daily basis is up to the individual. Our customers have gotten good results with 1-2 grams a day, with others taking up to 4-8 grams a day. As an example, I had a customer taking 2 grams (2000 mg) a day, and was happy with the results. After we discussed MSM dosage some more, the customer went home and increased to 4 grams a day and reported back the results were will worth the increase. Another example on the subject of dosage would be a female who was in a severe car accident. She took 24 grams a day for about 2 months, dropping down to 12 grams a day for another 2 months. She experienced very little neck and back pain, when by all accounts she should have been in more pain during this time period.
In the book The Miracle of MSM, the authors speak of very high dosages, 60 grams and more, but I feel strongly if you do these amounts you must be under your doctor's supervision.
Back to the question at hand: 2-8 grams a day, with my preference being 8 grams a day. At this level I have no allergy symptoms and do not experience any soreness from working out at the gym or playing golf.

What if I take too much MSM?

Are there any side effects from taking MSM?

Side effects usually occur when a substance is consumed that is not normally found in biological chemical reactions within the body. This can apply to herbs as well as prescribed medications and over-the-counter medicines. A substance is being put inot the body to either over ride the biological process, as in most medicines, or in the the herbal remedies to cause the biology of the body to change.
This is not the case with MSM. Sulfur is one of the 5 essential minerals in the body. The body needs sulfur to function correctly and as earlier explained sulfur is depleted as we age. Therefore, side effects are very rare even when MSM is consumed in very high doses.
MSM is an extremelly safe supplement. You can be secure in the knowledge that the MSM Club sells only the purest form of MSM available in the United States.

How safe is MSM?

How safe is MSM?

I want you to feel good about taking MSM, so Im going to quote directly from the book, The Miracle of MSM. You can buy this book from us, find it in the third section of our catalog. Knowledge is the key to achieving good health, along with implemention of the facts you learn about.
The overwhelming majority of people have no problem with MSM. It Is extremely safe. We haven't heard of any serious side effects to date. Thousands of patients have taken two grams and more daily of MSM for many months and years with no serious side effects.
Nevertheless, it should be pointed out that MSM is a biologically active substance. It has pharmacologic activity, meaning it can produce effects in the body. Such effects are described in this book and are virtually of a positive nature. Still, any agent with pharmacologic activity also has the potential for side effects.
Any substance on the planet, including water, has the potential to cause a reaction in some person somewhere. If you are a hypersensitive individual and have any doubts about using this supplement, consult with your physician first.
As already stated, taking too large a dose at one time for your particular constitution could cause some minor gastrointestinal upset, increased stool, or minimal abdominal cramping. If this occurs, reduce the level of MSM. That should take care of the discomfort.
Some people who might benefit the most from higher doses may not be able to reach their optimum level because of GI intolerance. After reducing the dosage to a level that you tolerate, you can try very slowly raising it again. However, if your body says that's it," then listen. Your body knows best.
Experience over the years suggests that MSM may have a similar dosage characteristic as vitamin C. By that we mean that if the body has a greater need for it there is a greater tolerance for higher doses.
It is well known that the sicker you are, the more vitamin C your body utilizes and tolerates. As an example, if you were to take 5 grams of vitamin C you might get temporary diarrhea. That is the major side effect of taking too much vitamin C. If you have a heavy cold or flu, you might be able to take 20 grams, or even much more in a very severe situation, without incurring any diarrhea.
Physicians familiar with vitamin C therapeutics refer to this as bowel tolerance. The sicker you are, the more your body needs, and the more you tolerate. Once you are healthy again, your body would not need the high level of the vitamin, and large doses would once again cause diarrhea. It is just below these bowel tolerance levels, the experts say, that vitamin C has its most powerful therapeutic effect.
There have been accounts in the medical literature of occasional minor skin rashes associated with DMSO. Because MSM is a related substance, the potential for a similar reaction also exists. Again, reducing dosage usually takes care of the problem. If it does not, than stop the MSM and try to resume it again in a few days but at a reduced level. If you develop a rash again, you should probably discontinue taking the supplement.
Temporary minor headaches may occasionally occur in the very beginning if a person starts at too high a level. For this reason we always recommend starting on a low dosage and increasing slowly.

Can I take MSM for many years to come?

Can I take MSM for many years to come?

In the book, The Miracle of MSM, the doctors state that they have had patients taking MSM for nearly 20 years.
My wife and I have been taking no less than 2 teaspoons a day for over 2 years.

Will taking MSM interfer with my medications?

Will taking MSM interfer with my medications?

MSM has been observed in clinial settings some indications that it may have a blood-thinning, aspirinlike effect on platelet aggregation. Therefore, you should consult your health professional if you are taking high doses of aspirin, or blood-thinning medication such as heparin or dicumarol.
If your health professional approves of you taking MSM, start at a low dose of MSM, perhaps 1 gram a day, and increasing the dosage at a very slow rate until you reach your optimum level.

Is it safe for a pregnant woman to take MSM?

Is it safe for a pregnant woman to take MSM?

Clinical experience indicates that MSM is safe for a woman to take during her pregnancy. I do recommend that you consult with your midwife first.

Is it safe for child to take MSM?

Is it safe for child to take MSM?

In our store we usually don’t push too much supplementation for healthy children. This approach does assume that the child is consuming health foods, not fast food junk food. But, if a child has allergies, asthma, skin problems, or arthritus, I would not hestitate for a moment to have the child take MSM. Start with a low dose, and increase the dosage to an optimum level. Many childrem have taken MSM, some in very large amounts, without any problems.
