India, Russia sign pact on Ayurveda teaching

Kochi, Nov 3. (UNI): India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Russia on collaboration in the field of Ayurveda teaching, treatment and research as part of the country's efforts at propagating India's traditional systems of medicine abroad.

According to Malati Sinha, Union Health Secretary, department of Indian systems of medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H), Panchkarma and Kshar Sutra were also in the process of being recognised by Russia while Hungary had recognised 40 Ayurvedic drugs and the medical schools in the USA wanted to introduce an ayurvedic module in their medical schools, she said.

Indian teaching institutions like Benaras Hindu University (BHU) and Gujarat Ayurved University (GAU) had entered into MoUs for collaboration in the field of education and research with institutions in Japan, Australia, the Netherlands, Argentina, Italy and USA.

Also, students from Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, France and Sri Lanka are undergoing BAMS course at GAU and professionals from the USA, Holland, Germany, Brazil, Switzerland, Ukraine were attending three months introductory course, she said.

BHU was conducting a nine month ayurvedic course for foreign students and imparting M D(Ayurveda) for doctors having MBBS qualifications, she said.

Speaking at the four-day first World Ayurveda Congress yesterday, she said a faculty of Ayurveda was being set up in Nelson Mandela School of Ayurveda.

UK too was introducing a herbal medicine course to be regulated by an act of Parliament, she added.

India had also proposed an Ayurvedic Core Programme of 1700 hrs to the U K which had already upgraded Ayurveda to category-1 for single formulation, Sinha said.
