The origin and history of Ayurvedic Medicine is a subject with which I am very familiar. I write this to add to what you, Karl Loren, have written on this same subject. I appreciate that you are not studied in this subject, but I marvel at your explanation HERE. As we have discussed, you and I have different backgrounds and, not surprisingly, different viewpoints on this. Here are some of my thoughts on this subject.
Here are further of my thoughts on this.
Veda – Ayurveda:
Veda was subjected to study and interpretation
by many scholars along the chain of human evolution in the last 10,000 Years.
Hence you will find several points of View.
Whatever I am writing here is my understanding & point of View.
The Caste system evolved in Ancient India purely based on Aptitude & Skill of individuals for division of labor and responsibility to build a stable & harmonious society.
Brahmins - Seekers and Preachers of Knowledge, Teachers / Gurus, Priests, Religious Heads...etc.
Kshatriyas - Kings, Rulers, Administrators, Warriors, Soldiers and Police ...etc.
Vaishyas - Industrialists, Traders & Business men.
Shudras - All other Categories including agriculturists, workmen etc...
This above system got degraded & mixed up later as it was not strictly adhered to - as originally designed and intended.
Many sub-sects were created in all the above categories as the time passed by, making the society as divisive as possible, contrary to the original purpose of making it cohesive. A case of miserable failure of the dynamic existence of groups.
Veda --- Literally means “Knowledge” …. Complete Knowingness.
Ayurveda --- Literally means “Knowledge of Longevity” or “Knowledge of Physical Survival”.
Veda is broadly divided into 2 –Categories of purpose and pursuit … Spiritualism & Ritualism.
Veda is not considered a book (as knowledge cannot be a mere book), nor is it's orientation or purpose - religious in any way going by its contents. You will only find "Universal Truths" in it.
Hindus have adopted Veda as a source of knowledge & guide to practice their way of life. Hence Veda does not belong to Hindus alone. It belongs to the entire humanity. Hinduism is not guided by "One Book" or "One Prophet". The core & fundamental tenets of Hinduism is ... to be guided by one's own "Conscience" while making use of the "Veda" as a source of knowledge.
Veda, for the sake of
convenience of studying and handling different subjects - was divided into
4-parts .…viz.… Rig Veda, Yazur Veda, Saama Veda & Atharvana Veda.
Ayurveda is partly covered in Yazur Veda (Therapeutic Medication & Surgery, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Botany, Marine & Mineral Biology, Bio-Physics, Bio-Chemistry etc) --- and partly in Atharvana Veda (Toxicology, Psychotropy, Psycho Therapy such as Hypnotism, Manipulative Therapy such as Osteopathy, Reflexology, Bone Setting, Massaging etc.)
Ayurveda – as is practiced now, draws data from both the Vedas and integrates it into one package for convenience and efficacy. Ayurveda strongly recommends a Holistic approach to Health-Care, and strongly forbids “Spare-Part-Therapy”.
Let me start with some simple definitions.

Click here for even more detailed instructions on how to take this Herbal MSM.
Now ... the medicine in the mixture is absorbed in the mucous membrane of the mouth ---- nutrition in the mixture is absorbed in the stomach and intestines. The action of the medicine is supported by the nutrition. The "Taste" is what triggers the corresponding immuno mechanism and prepares the system to utilize the medicine & the nutrition that are being made available.
We have "pills" in
Western society because we have such a desire for "pleasant taste" that our
medicines are coated pills to be swallowed. If you wonder about the
Ayurvedic principle of "tasting" the herbs (no pills available 5000 years
ago!), try this experiment. Virtually everyone in our society has
taken pain-killers at some time, and many of us are on pain-killers,
aspirin, etc., on a regular basis. We swallow the pill. Try
taking that same pill and chewing it, slowly, instead of swallowing it
quickly. Chew it and let the saliva mix with the pieces, and hold it
in your mouth for a short while, and then swallow the liquid.
It probably won't taste very pleasant!
You will discover that your headache, or pain, for which you were taking the pain-killer will disappear much more quickly than when you swallow that same pill.
Either drugs OR herbs (or even vitamins, etc.) will be absorbed into the body much more quickly if they are chewed, mixed with saliva, tasted, than when they are swallowed. It just happens that the Ayurvedic principle involved here originated those 5,000 years ago, based on observation when the purpose was to be a remedy rather than to be easy.
Have you ever noticed that just thinking about something yummy can make your mouth water, or that your stomach gurgles when you're hungry. Those are signs that your body is getting ready to digest the food that may soon enter through your mouth. Saliva is the watery stuff in your mouth. It's mostly water, but has a few enzymes in it as well. The saliva enzymes break down carbohydrates (foods like bread, pasta, potatoes, cereals, pancakes, tortillas, etc.). Chewing helps breakdown the food and mixes it with the saliva, starting the digestion process and making the food easier to swallow. (source)
There is a vital omission in the next above reference. The reference says that "Useful breakdown products" are all absorbed in the intestines. However, they are also absorbed, particularly, in the mouth. This concept of digestion and absorption is usually never mentioned in the West -- as only the Ayurvedic approach to health stresses the absorption through the tissues of the mouth. This is the area of absorption which is most of use in healing the body and it is also the reason why this herbal MSM is supposed to be put in the mouth as a powder, tasted, and mixed with the saliva in the mouth -- this would be the ONLY way by which these particular herbal components could be absorbed in the mouth tissues.
In fact it is hardly understood at all in the West. The Villi are said (described further in the reference) to be the area of the body (in the intestines) where "food" is absorbed. The use of the word "food" is much too limiting. A plant can serve as food and its components be absorbed within the intestine, and by these villi. But that same plant could contain components that would never become available without the enzymes in the mouth, and would still never be available unless absorbed through the mouth tissues.
This is one of the primary principles of Ayurvedic treatment -- first it is plants, herbs that are used as the source of treatment, not toxic drugs.
Next, these plants are often used as food, absorbed in the intestines, but the same plant, properly processed in the mouth, in fact, becomes a "medicine" within the Ayurvedic tradition.
Thus in order for the herbal MSM to be useful beyond the already great action of the MSM, alone, the extracted herbs must come into contact with the saliva and mouth tissues, and enter the body through that area rather than the intestines. (Source)
Here is another typical example of the inadequate view of digestion in the Western science.
Beginning in the mouth with chewing, food is physically broken up into small pieces to facilitate the beginning of complete digestion. Chewing thoroughly is an important step because smaller pieces offer more surface area for contact with the digestive enzymes and acids in the stomach and are therefore more easily digested. Chewing also stimulates the release of hormones that control appetite. The longer you chew, the less likely you are to overeat.
Only one digestive enzyme, amylase (for starch), is present in the mouth. However, food is normally not in the mouth long enough to permit complete digestion and little nutrient absorption takes place in the mouth. (Source)
The last statement, in the referenced text above, says
"little nutrient absorption takes place in the mouth."
When a society uses toxic drugs as "medicine" and pills to deliver them,
there would hardly be any awareness of "absorption" of "medicines" through
the tissues of the mouth -- that is the whole of the concept of Ayurvedic
medicine administration. Even in India many who should know better
have fallen into the clutches of modern drug-oriented medicine and prepare,
worthlessly, Ayurvedic herbs in pills that are swallowed whole (of course)
and never absorbed through the mouth, as they should be.
Herbs are basically plants, and are therefore carbohydrates. Even when concentrated or in an extracted form, the enzymes which would be most useful in "processing" these plants would be contained particularly in the mouth, and the mechanical action of tasting them and even chewing them (although no chewing is necessary), or mixing these herbal extracts with the saliva provides a very different route of entry, or a very different (changed) substance because it has been "processed" with the enzymes in the saliva.
For this reason the powder in the capsules in this jar must be opened and
the contents of the capsule placed in your mouth, mixed with the natural
saliva in your mouth. You do not swallow the entire capsule. If
you wish, you can add any fluid to the natural saliva in your mouth.
You should seek to taste the contents, not try to swallow without tasting.
The use of capsules to deliver this product to you is for your ease in
measuring out the quantity, and for maintaining freshness. If you
swallow the entire capsule it will certainly not harm you in any way, but
you would be missing out on a vital part of the efficacy of this product.
MSR Ayyangar.
Here is more of my concept of health.
The new question that is gaining momentum all over the
health-starved world is, “Can nutrition cure?” The normal thought that occurs
to any mind when one thinks of a disease is that it is essential to have a drug
or a medicine for the cure.
The word "cure" itself is not well defined either medically or technically and often the treatment talks of "control" (meaning suppression) and not cure. In the contemporary medical world, "cure" is explained and understood as the apparent diminution or removal of symptoms, which often results in transformation of one set of symptoms to another, shifting in nature and location. Alternately this apparent diminution or removal is established not by dealing with the cause, but only by reducing or removing the capacity of the patient to perceive these symptoms, or, altering the physical manifestation of these symptoms. Thus the cure here is illusory and not real.

You can use the engineering concept of a “vector.” A
vector has both direction and quantity. A disease is something that has a
certain dynamic quality and is moving in a certain direction. In general
the “quality” is a degenerative one. The rate of change tells us the seriousness of the disease. |
A disease is a vector with a degenerative dynamic – that is it
has a quantitative force with a qualitative identity. A disease is usually
recognized well after it has started, and “treated” in its current condition.
Better, surely, would be to understand its origin, and work toward the
elimination of the source rather than to treat the symptom.
Where and how does it originate is rarely understood. Study of this aspect has not been given the deserved importance in modern medical research.
|
Effects are interpreted as causes, generating limitless
confusion in the path of understanding the true originating dynamics of a
disease. In the process, the concept of treating a disease was centered on
creating another vector that purely and squarely opposes the original vector
that is described as the disease.
|
![]() |
This automatically results purely in the suppression of
symptoms and not the elimination of them, which should actually be called a
cure. The only way to eliminate the symptom is to deal with the cause of the
symptom itself. The route to this is to dissipate the disease vector, rather
than oppose it and keep it bottled. This is exactly what Nutrition can do.
But, the key is not just Nutrition, but "Harmonious Nutrition".
Nutrition is too limited when it concerns only the fuel needed
to operate the body. A body can have its own overall vector – a combination of
many individual disease vectors. Perhaps these would be better understood as
the absence of optimum vectors toward health. A small bit of indigestion here,
a skin rash there, all these add up to a non-optimum condition. Any one of them
might not be considered a “disease” but they are tiny non-optimum,
non-harmonious vectors. These can be seen as the precursors to serious disease
vectors.
When you consider, for instance, the non-serious condition of
a ‘bit of indigestion,” you can easily see that the “cure” for this would be
mild indeed – no strong drug is needed at this point. And, with that
application there should be no disease vector coming into existence. And, if
your food was such that you NEVER had that indigestion, then that tiny vector of
indigestion could never grow into something serious.
Harmony of body organs and functions is the true “cure”
because the harmony does not allow any disease vector to ever start.
An example of this in the Indian tradition of food preparation
is the usage of Turmeric, Ginger, Coriander seeds etc. These have acknowledged
harmonizing properties apart from being taste enhancers or modifiers. These
seeds bring harmony to the body. They are not “curing” a disease, but creating
harmony. Disease cannot originate in a state of bodily harmony!
Likewise, there are many “foods” which inherently bring disharmony, and allow the disharmonious condition to escalate into disease. Excess use of sugar would surely be one of these!

One cannot grasp these fundamentals of “harmony” and “disease” without wanting to apply this knowledge to the benefit of his fellow. |
MSR Ayyangar, Managing Director of Emmessar Biotech &
Nutrition Ltd (formerly known as Emmessar Chemical Industries Ltd) has done
considerable study and research in understanding the process of disease, the
process of health and their inter relationship. He arrived at the above concept
and conclusion based not only on his study but of his daily practical
application in the “treatment” of many patients in his “health practice.”
The in-house R&D function of Emmessar Biotech & Nutrition
Ltd., is recognized by DSIR. He actually started concentrating on their
research in the nutritional supplements field in 1994.
On request from some US Companies, Emmessar first developed DMG. HCl (N,N-Dimethyl Glycine Hydrochloride) and exported to USA. This substance has often been referred to as “pangamic acid” or sometimes “vitamin B15.” It has many uses, but currently its main use is as an ingredient for Animal feed supplements, particularly for racehorses and thoroughbreds.
|
Encouraged by quality approval in USA of its first product in the health care field, the R&D progressed to add two more products which are TMG.HCl (N,N,N-Trimethyl Glycine Hydrochloride) and DMSO2 (Dimethyl Sulphone) also known as MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane). |
|
These products (TMG, DMG and MSM) have been exported by Emmessar into the United States where they are inspected and re-packaged for shipment all over the world. Once they have been processed into and within the United States, they are then shipped all over the world with an FDA certificate of approval. No other source of these products has achieved this level of FDA approval.
In the beginning of 1999, MSR Ayyangar realized that there is a wide gap between what is claimed by the manufacturing and marketing companies, and what is experienced by the consumer in respect of many skin care products in the world market. The message was loud and clear from the consumer's frustration. Ninety percent of the products do not appear to work as per the claims, as perceived by the consumer. This seemed particularly so if relief and satisfaction of the consumer (patient) was to be the true barometer of this measurement, and not the sales volumes and the profits.
There is a very wide gap between the demand and supply, not in
quantitative terms as there are countless products flooding the market, but, in
qualitative terms of efficacy and effectiveness in providing relief and cure to
the consumer.
This observation resulted in a revelation and a resultant conviction to develop a new family of skin care products with a difference -- the difference being "The Product Shall Work".
![]() |
The first product (of many in pipeline) that came out of this effort is "CalmCream" -- a skin-care and skin-cure cream that is made out of nutritional substances and Ayurvedic herbs. |
In order to arrive at this revolutionary product it was necessary to combine the principles and the concepts of different schools of thought and systems to make a holistic approach. The results were not only positive, but were incredibly impressive. Thus a single cream that can not only relieve and cure many obstinate skin conditions, but also be simultaneously a skin-care (prophylactic) cream was born to enter the world market.
![]() |
Several Indian and international health care and pharmaceutical companies are evincing interest in marketing this product globally, having been impressed with the results of the user trials. While a small launch has already taken place in USA, Canada and Australia, the Indian launch had to wait for the Indian FDA approval, which has just been obtained by the Company. |
1.Q) What is
CalmCream?
A)
CalmCream is a Skin Cream, which is a Registered Trade Mark in India and
USA.
2.Q)
Why the name CalmCream?
A)
In our user trials in India, USA, Canada and Oman, there was uniformly a
common expression from the users. They all said there is an instant calming
feeling in the applied area of the skin and a reduced level of irritability and
inflammation, which can be sensed instantly. We immediately thought that God
has named my Cream and has pronounced it through the users. We had no second
thought and named it CalmCream.
3.Q) How is CalmCream different from
any other cream?
A)
There are several unique features. The process of manufacture is a
harmonious fusion of applied chemistry, Ayurveda and biotechnology. Another
unique feature is in having all ingredients, which are nutritional or edible
substances. But still it works like a miraculous medicine for numerous skin
conditions such as cuts, wounds, bruises, burns, bed sores, diabetic sores,
herpes, psoriasis, gangrene, allergic eruptions, insect bites, frost bites etc.
4.Q) How is it possible that one
cream can cure so many conditions? The general perception is "cure-all" means
"cure-none". Is this not true?
A)
We are aware of this, and we had several prolonged debates on this
subject. However, when we observed that our CalmCream worked in all the
conditions repeatedly covering different age groups, gender and racial groups,
we had to accept what we were seeing as "senior factor" and a "greater reality"
than the common perception of most people. It is at this stage that we started a
deeper investigation into this phenomenon, and came to the inevitable
conclusion, that it is "possible" because, CalmCream is a nutritional product
and does not have the inherently self limiting property like drugs. Drugs are
inherently self-limiting in their action because they are designed towards a
highly specified and narrowly focused goal to suppress or modify a condition.
For instance:. An anti-fungal drug cannot also be an anti-scabies. This
restriction is removed in the nutritional cure.
5.Q)
What was your principal objective in developing such a multi purpose cream?
A)
To provide "a simple solution to complex skin problems, and to save
the patients from complex solutions to their simple problems".
6. Q) Are
there any more products in the offing?
A)
Many are in the offing. Several skin creams for some specific
applications such as rheumatic and arthritic pains, acne and pimples, spider
bites for Australian market, insect bites for the African market etc., which are
not covered by CalmCream, and some cosmetic products such as beauty creams,
shampoos for dandruff and lice, hair oils, shaving creams etc., and ethical
products such as eye cleansing drops, ear cleansing drops, nasal anti-snoring
sprays etc.
