Ayurveda is the natural healing system of India. In Sanskrit, the word "Ayurveda" means 'science of life'. Ayu means life or daily living, and Veda means knowing.

Ayurveda was first recorded in the Vedas, the world's oldest literature.

The Vedic system, including Ayurveda was in practice before 4000 B.C.

Vedic science includes Yoga, meditation and astrology as its branches for dealing with physical body.

Ayurveda helps the healthy person to maintain health, and a diseased person to regain health. It is both a medical and metaphysical healing science.

It includes herbal medicines, dietetics, bodywork, surgery, psychology and spirituality.

In Ayurveda the creative force 'Dhanvantari' the divine healer, symbolizes Brahma.

All Ayurveda literature is based on the Samkya philosophy of creation. 'Sat' means 'truth' and 'Kya' means 'to seek', to know.

The ancient Rishis, or realized beings, discovered truth by means of religious practices, disciplines and through intensive meditations. Rishis and sages like Shushrutacharya, Charakacharya, Vagbaht, Sarangdhar etc. created great commentaries, contributing their efforts and insights to make it available to all of us.

Ayurveda is concerned with eight principle branches of medicines, collectively called 'Ashtang Ayurveda'. They are pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, geriatrics, otolaryngology, general medicine and surgery.

All these medical specialties are addressed according to theories of five elements (Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth), the Tridoshas or bodily humors (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), the seven Dhatus or bodily tissues, the three Malas or waste (urine, stool and sweat), and spiritual growth.
Any imbalance between body, mind and environment begins the process of disease.

The treatment not only works on the disease but also emphasizes achieving more health, longevity and awareness.
There are various treatments including a daily regime, Meditations, Pranayama, Yoga, balanced diet according to the body type, the attributes, the medicines, and a variety of cleansing process called Panchakarma, Shirodhara, Rasayani, Vajikaran, etc.

PANACHAKARMA
Ayurvedic treatment attempts to establish a balance between bodily humors. According to Ayurveda first eliminating the toxins (excess dosas) that are responsible for the disease, is very important in the initiation of any form of treatment. There are two types of toxins. The neutralization of toxins can be applied on both physical and emotional levels.
Panchakarma is basically cleansing process that not only treats diseases but also improve health to achieve longevity and rejuvenation. According to individual's health status, one or more processes can be useful for improving the health.
Pancha means five and Karma means action or process.
These are five process are:
Vaman (Vomiting), Virechana (purgative or laxative), Basti (medicated enemas), Nasya (nasal administration) and Raktmokshan-blood letting (purification of the blood).
There are detail guidelines in Ayurveda about these process with indication and contra-indication as well the Purvakarmas (pre-processes) and Pachatkarma (precautions after the cleansing process).
Snehan (oil massage) and Swedan (steaming) are pre-procedures for Panchakarma.

SNEHANA (Abhyangam) is the oil massage. In this oil is applied to the entire body with a particular type of massage, which helps to balance the body elements, improve their functions, make the superficial and deep tissues soft and detoxify the body
Swedana is the sudation or sweating by exposure to steam. With herbs added steam the body is made to perspire to loosen and excrete the toxins. Swedan done locally or on the full body itself helps in various sicknesses including arthritis.
Vamana : Emesis Therapy
This is the therapeutic vomiting, which eliminate the aggravated kapha dhosha .Its highly effective to relive the congestion from lungs and sinus.
Virechana: Purgation Therapy
This is the administration of therapeutic purgation or a therapeutic laxative which helps in removing and balancing the excess bile (pitta).
Nasya : Nasal Administration
This is the nasal administration of medication to remove the excess of bodily humors accumulated in the sinus, throat, nose or head areas through the nose.
Basti: Enema Therapy
This involves the introduction into the rectum of herbal concoctions of sesame oil, and certain herbal preparations in a liquid medium for the effective treatment of Vata disorders, relieve constipation, distention, chronic fever, cold, kidney stones, heart pain, backache, sciatica and other pains in the joints.

PIZHICHIL In this treatment lukewarm herbal oils are applied all over your body in a special rhythmic way.. This treatment is very useful for Rheumatic diseases like arthritis, paralysis, hemiplegia and paralysis - agitanus,

NJAVARAKIZHI It is a process in which your whole body or any specific part is made to perspire by the application of certain medicinal puddings externally in the form of boluses tied up in muslin bag. This treatment is very effective for all types of rheumatism, joint pains, emaciation of limbs, blood pressure, cholesterol and certain kinds of skin diseases.

DHARA In this process, some herbal oils or medicated milk or medicated buttermilk is poured on your forehead in a special method. This treatment is mainly for insomnia, vata predominant diseases, mental tension and certain skin diseases.

SIROVASTHI Specially prepared herbal oils are poured into a cap fitted on the head. This treatment is highly effective for facial paralysis, dryness of mouth, nostrils and throat, severe headaches, burning sensation of the head and other vata-oriented diseases.

SNEHAPANAM In this you are given medicated ghee to be taken orally for a no of days. This treatment is for osteo-arthritis, skin diseases etc.

KIZHI In this procedure herbal leaf, herbs or herbal powders are applied to your whole body in boluses with hot medicated oils. This treatment is effective for all types of arthritis, spondilosis, sports injuries etc.

NETRABASTII In this treatment sesame or herbal oil is kept on the eye for 15 to 20 minutes. This treatment is especially helpful in Vata and Pitta disorders. It helps in the treatment for conjunctivitis, burning sensation, vision problems, glaucoma. This also enhances the beauty of the eye.
