What is MSM?
MSM is the registered trademark for dietary methylsulfonylmethane, a natural sulfur nutrient. Methylsulfonylmehtane is a derivative of DMSO (DIMETHYLSULFOXIDE). The majority of DMSO absorbed by the horse's tissues is oxidized to form methylsulfonulmethane. MSM is a form of organic sulfur found in all living organisms, such as body fluids and tissues, mother's milk and a variety of fruits. Methylsulfonylmethane is a white crystalline powder that is one of the most bio-available sources of sulfur which is easy to feed and is very palatable to horses.

What can MSM do for horses?
While many claims have been made by horsemen regarding the therapeutic properties of methylsulfonylmethane, the most detailed research has demonstrated its effectiveness as a dietary source of sulfur. It's uses have effective responses to stress, gastrointestinal upset, inflammation of mucous membranes, pain associated with musculoskeletal system disorders (osteoathritis), soft tissue healing and allergies. The equine athlete can also use methylsulfonylmethane in the creation of vital disulfide bonds, which are essential for the proper conformation of protein associated with connective tissue hormones and antibodies.

Why should Horses be supplemented with MSM?
It is known that methylsulfonylmethane is found in very small amounts in most vegetables, fruits and grains, and it is easily lost duet to its volatile nature. The heat and water processing of feeds and the drying of hay destroys the content. No. By ruling of the U.S. District Court of Oregon in July 1990, pure MSM is perfectly legal for sale and use as a dietary supplement. Because methylsulfonylmethane also has industrial uses, an inferior grade is also manufactured which is expressly not for human or animal consumption Yet a few unscrupulous companies are selling this industrial grade methylsulfonylmethane to horse owners as a feed supplement. How can I Identify Genuine MSM?
