1. Officially, this substance has about the
same toxicity as water. Salt is more toxic than MSM! (Return to text.)
2. The first line of an abstract from the study by E. N. Spremulli and D. L. Dexter, appearing in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, in March 1984. To be found in the Medlines database with the unique identifier of 84137891. Further reference and quotes are included elsewhere in this article. (Return to text.)
3. The medical dictionary does define it with fancier terms: an aggregation of similarly specialized cells united in the performance of a particular function. [Dorlands Illustrated Medical Dictionary] (Return to text.)
4. Benign: not malignant; not recurrent; favorable for recovery. [Dorlands] (Return to text.)
5. From the Spremulli Research Report referenced above: It has been known for many decades that certain murine and human cancers can spontaneously mature to benign tissue. These observations have stimulated investigators to attempt to induce a state of more normal or benign differentiation in cancer cells using biologic substances or chemicals. Polar solvents including dimethylsulfoxide [DMSO], dimethylformamide, and monomethylformamide have proven to be good inducers of maturational events in murine and human cancer cells. Moreover, several laboratories have demonstrated that polar solvents inhibit the growth of human tumor xenografts in nude mice. These findings have resulted in the entry of monomethylformamide into phase I clinical trials in America and Europe. Preclinical work further suggests that polar solvents may be useful agents in combination with conventional treatment modalities. The use of drugs such as monomethylformamide that can convert neoplastic cells to benign cells rather than kill the tumor cells represents an important conceptual departure from standard cytotoxic chemotherapy. The use of maturational-agent therapy should be considered as an important new development in the design of cancer treatment protocols. (Return to text.)
6. Another is N Acetyl Cysteine, NAC, the main ingredient in my newly designed "super oral chelation" formula. If you want more information about this substance, click here. (Return to text.)
7. MSM stands for Methyl Sulfonyl Methane, sometimes written as Methylsulfonylmethane. (Return to text.)
8. Some people are fond of throwing around these fancy words. I apologize for having to include them. You may or may not have heard of DMSO. Those letters stand for dimethylsulfoxide. DMSO has been well popularized for years, but the full name is hardly ever used. There are literally hundreds of good research reports on DMSO. Click here to see some. There are several good ones about MSM, but not nearly as many as there are for DMSO. You can think of MSM as the same thing as DMSO but with an added oxygen atom. In fact, MSM COULD be called DMSO2, because there is an extra oxygen atom connected to the molecule. So, think of MSM as being an oxygen-enriched form of DMSO. Nature produces this substance, naturally, but it took some real engineering to be able to "manufacture" it. There may be some secret to that, and there are claims of "patents," but the patents that are promoted in connection with MSM have nothing to do with how the stuff is made. They have only to do with how it is used! Dr. Jacobs associate, Dr. Robert Herschler, got several patents for these nutritional claims. As an example of how simple a patent can be, here is the actual legal language from the patent: (Return to text.)
Patent Number 4,296,130: Preparations containing methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) for administration to the skin, nails, other tissue and/or body fluids of a human or other animal subject are disclosed. Such compositions soften skin, strengthen nails and provide other benefits when applied topically. And, MSM compositions may also be administered orally, by injection and by inhalation. (Return to text.)
In many instances, the effectiveness of MSM compositions is enhanced when such compositions contain carbamide (urea). Also, carbamide compositions are stabilized when they contain the MSM. (Return to text.)
For topical administration, MSM compositions may be formulated in creams, lotions or gels which may be used alone or to serve as stable, neutral vehicles for other skin conditioning substances or therapeutically active drugs. Aqueous MSM solutions are suitable blood diluents. (Return to text.)
9. For instance, see the study published in Fortschr Med, April 1994, by Dr. W. Kneer, Dr. S. Kuhnau, Dr. P. Bias and Dr. R. F. Haag, which indicates: "In a placebo-controlled double-blind study, 157 patients with acute tenopathies (periarthropathia humeroscapularis or lateral epicondylitis) were randomized to treatment with either DMSO gel 10% applied three times a day (n = 77) or the gel excipient (n = 80). The treatment phase was 14 days long and included four examinations. Treatment was started with 72 hours after the onset of the acute symptoms. RESULTS: Pain of movement under loading and the mobility of the joints were significantly improved after, respectively, 3 and 7 days treatment with DMSO, as compared with placebo. After 14 days on DMSO, a further improvement was observed, and 44% of the patients were pain-free (placebo 9%). In both groups, the substance was well or very well tolerated by more than 90% of the patients. No relevant changes in laboratory results or severe undesired events occurred under treatment. Undesired events were seen in 8 patients receiving DMSO treatment, and in 3 patients in the placebo group,. CONCLUSION: The results of this study confirm that Rheumabene (10% DMSO gel) is suitable for topical use in the treatment of acute tenopathy, producing clinically relevant results with little risk to the patient." 10. For instance, see the study published in Med Hypotheses, December 1993, by Dr. A. Toren and Dr. G. Rechavi, showing that DMSO "has long been known to be a potent inducer of differentiation of various malignant cells in animals and human beings. It is a toxic agent, and high concentrations are needed to induce differentiation. . . . [DMSO] still has a very important role in bone marrow transplantation, being added to the frozen marrow as a cyroprotectant. We suggest that [DMSO] may induce differentiation of malignant cells present in the marrow or alternatively in the body when it is infused back with the transplanted marrow. " MedLines unique identifier 94239253. (Return to text.)
11. For instance, one study summarizes what many others indicate: "DMSO enhances diffusion of other chemicals through the skin, and for this reason, mixtures of idoxuridine and DMSO are used for topical treatment of herpes zoster in the UK." By Dr. B. N. Swanson, published in Clin. Basic Pharm, 1985, Jan-June. MedLines unique identifier 87148116. (Return to text.)
12. Dr. Jacob certainly did NOT invent MSM. It has existed in nature for millions of years. But, he researched it and found ways to extract it from inexpensive sources so that we can now have it available as a nutrient in a white powder form, placed usually in capsules. (Return to text.)
13. See, for instance, the study done by Dr. R. L. Neulieb and Dr. M. K. Neulieb, published in Cytobios, 1990, which indicates: "Many membrane-based phenomena depend upon the membranes ability to regulate the transport of specific cations, principally Na, Ca and mg. These cations are responsible for a substantial portion of cellular nutrient uptake and the generation/propagation of an action potential. Surfactants, such as carcinogens and some anesthetics, can disrupt the transport of these cations. Certain highly polar solvents, such as DMSO, can, at times, decrease the effects of carcinogens or some anesthetics by "cleansing" the membrane. Yet, on the other hand, they can interact directly with the membrane, producing effects similar to these surfactants. " Unique Identifier: 91153072. (Return to text.)
14. Study done By Dr. S. W. Jacob and Dr. R. Herschler, published in Cryobiology, February 1986. MedLines unique identifier 86163325. (Return to text.)
15. Well, lets count them: First, I designed the "Super Oral Chelation" so I take THIRTY of those per day. Then, there are the 10 Bone Dense Calcium, 10 Taheebo Life Tea, 10 Super Blue Green Algae (Omega), 3 Enzymes with each meal (9), 5 Acidophilus, 3 (extra) Co Q10, 3 (extra) DHEA, 3 (extra) N Acetyl Cysteine, 2 (extra) Vitamin C, 3 (extra) Beta Carotene, 2 (extra) Vitamin E, and several other "experimental" nutrients. I take a few ounces of Clarks Colloidal Minerals, and a cup of liquid calcium-magnesium every night, and sometimes L-Tryptophane. Not quite 100, there, but very close. (Return to text.)
16. There is another mechanism here, not written about by anyone else that I know of. I'll develop it further another day. but, as the body fails in its attempt to handle toxins, it gives up and stores them in the fatty tissue. THEN, if the person is, like most of use seem to be, foolish enough to continue taking in these toxins (Coke, etc.), the fatty tissues won't hold any more and the final load just stays in the blood stream, suffusing the cells, causing pain and stupidity. There is the description of the "druggie." For such a person taking MSM would seem foolish if the intake of toxins continues. For such a person, the first step would be ethical honesty -- stop putting the crap into your body. Start drinking LOTS of water, getting some exercise, and "sweat it out." Another interesting part of this whole mechanism is what happens when a relatively clean body, with toxins in the fatty tissues, starts with MSM. As the toxins come out of the fatty tissues, they COULD be flushed away without causing pain, but we don't drink enough water during the process. So, the toxins come out of the fatty tissue, and INTO some other cells. It would ONLY be the toxins inside cells that cause pain, and the MSM will flush that out only if there is enough water, and enough elimination, to do that. MSM can be a wonderful detoxifying agent, but the full mechanism is complex and each body may well vary as to the response. You could have fun getting clean. Let me know. (Return to text.)
17. Study done by Dr. V. L. Richmond, published in Life Science, 1986, July 21st issue,. Medlines Unique Identifier: 86284008. (Return to text.)
18. If you suddenly started drinking lots of water, you could start a detoxification process that might seem dramatic. MSM can be the same. But, remember, it is the toxins in the body coming out, not the water or the MSM, which are causing the symptoms you experience. I had pimples develop where toxins were being released through the skin. Some people have other symptoms some none! (Return to text.)
20. This depends on whether there are the other amino acids present. If ALL the amino acids are present at the same time (proper balance), then the amino acids are all used for building structure (or are expelled as undigested proteins). Only when an amino acid is "out of balance" does it get used for some special use. Thus, cysteine, taken in an "out of balance" amount (1,000 mg of cysteine, daily, not balanced by other amino acids, is an "out of balance amount"), helps the body get rid of toxic metals. If you take MSM "out of balance," it wont convert to cysteine to do this metal detoxifying; it would simply become inert and not used. So, there is still a good reason to take cysteine as a separate, free-form amino acid, along with MSM. (Return to text.)
20. There is a mechanism here, relating to weight loss, that I'll write about another day. I personally, was on the Adkins weight loss diet before starting MSM. THEN, after being on MSM and after vowing to keep processed grain and sugar products OUT of my diet, I continued to lose weight even though I added in complex carbohydrates. There seems to be no doubt that MSM helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates, and that, for many people, processed foods ARE toxins. MSM can help you detoxify, but it would be foolish to use MSM to detoxify while continuing to put more toxins INTO the body. What is Coke, bread or sugar, anyway, but useless calories at best, and toxins most likely. There are body types which are basically allergic to wheat -- wheat is a toxin for these people. MSM can help get rid of that allergy, but for goodness sakes, don't fool yourself into thinking you can keep eating that junk! (Return to text.)
21. Study by Dr. D. McCabe, Dr. P. ODwyer, Dr. B. Sickle-Santanello, Dr. E. Woltering, Dr. H. Abou-Issa and Dr. A. James, published in the Archives of Surgery, December 1986. Unique Identifier Number 87075265, MedLines. The study also showed that there was no toxic reaction from the use of MSM to prevent breast cancer in mice. Notice, again, that this study is "old." Research of this type is done, found to be promising as a health matter, but when there is no further money to support the research, there us no more research! (Return to text.)
22. Study by Dr. P. J. ODwyer, "Dr. D. P. McCabe, Dr. B. J. Sickle-Santanello, Dr. E. A. Woltering, Dr. K. Clausen and Dr. E. W. Martin, Jr., published in Cancer, September 1, 1988. MedLines unique identifier number 88310734. (Return to text.)
23. The word simply means "acid loving," and thats the condition of the stomach where these bacterial thrive! (Return to text.)
24. What a fabulous testimonial. With all the thousands of people suffering from this malady, and the other maladies mentioned here, and with MSM being so safe and relatively inexpensive, youd think that a few hundred, at least, doctors would be researching this stuff, and recommending it to their patients. Well, the fact is that there ARE many doctors who recommend MSM, but the media doesnt bring you that story. The world of "stupid lies" is on the front page of your paper, and on your TV screen. You can find the truth, but you have to look hard for it. Then, you have some obligation to tell your friends. I bring this to YOU, but I count on you to bring it to others. (Return to text.)
25. This is a standard research technique where some substance, such as MSM, is radiated with Strontium 35, a radioactive material. The MSM then is radioactive. The MSM is then fed to an animal, or person. Then, a few minutes later, or a week, or a month later, sensitive measuring devices can locate the radioactive particles. In other words, the measuring device detects WHERE the MSM has gone to in the body, and how much has left. The measurements can also be done on the urine, or sweat, or breath, to find out how the MSM leaves the body. In this way researchers can tell WHERE in the body the MSM goes, and how long it stays there, and when it leaves that place. (Return to text.)
26. Note that Dr. Jacob is remarking here that MSM, as well as Vitamin C, are "water soluble" substances. That means that they "wash out" of the body regularly. But, some of them may be stored in some places. Research is still going on. Dr. Jacob is guessing that MSM, and Vitamin C, may be stored in the Adrenal Gland, but that is not definite. Generally, these water soluble substances need to be taken into the body every day to assure proper levels in the system. (Return to text.)
27. Note that Dr. Jacob, and other researchers, got remarkable results with MSM in doses as low as 500 mg per day. Popular interest in this product is driving people to find even more dramatic benefits at much larger dosage levels. When you take MSM, you can and should balance the cost with the benefit. You can get good benefit from a few hundred milligrams per day, and you might well have far more dramatic, if more expensive, results at 6,000 mg per day. (Return to text.)
28. Research study by: Kelly RM; Adams MW, Department of Chemical Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh 27695. Published in: Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek, 1994, 66:1-3, 247-70: Hyperthermophilic microorganisms grow at temperatures of 90 degrees C and above and are a recent discovery in the microbial world. They are considered to be the most ancient of all extant life forms, and have been isolated mainly from near shallow and deep sea hydrothermal vents. All but two of the nearly twenty known genera are classified as Archaea (formerly archaebacteria). Virtually all of them are strict anaerobes. The majority are obligate heterotrophs that utilize proteinaceous materials as carbon and energy sources, although a few species are also saccharolytic. Most also depend on the reduction of elemental sulfur to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) for significant growth. Peptide fermentation involves transaminases and glutamate dehydrogenase, together with several unusual ferredoxin-linked oxidoreductases not found in mesophilic organisms. Similarly, a novel pathway based on a partially non-phosphorylated Entner-Doudoroff scheme has been postulated to convert carbohydrates to acetate, H2 and CO2, although a more conventional Embden-Meyerhof pathway has also been identified in one saccharolytic species. The few hypethermophiles known that can assimilate CO2 do so via a reductive citric acid cycle. Two S(o)-reducing enzymes termed sulfhydrogenase and sulfide dehydrogenase have been purified from the cytoplasm of a hyperthermophile that is able to grow either with or without S(o). A scheme for electron flow during the oxidation of carbohydrates and peptides and the reduction of S(o) has been proposed. However, the mechanisms by which S(o) reduction is coupled to energy conservation in this organism and in obligate S(o)-reducing hyperthermophiles is not known. (Return to text.)
