What the Hair Evidence for MSM Really Shows

The short answer: MSM is not proven to grow human hair

If you are considering an MSM hair growth supplement for thinning or shedding, the practical verdict is straightforward: the available evidence does not demonstrate a clinically meaningful human hair-growth effect.

MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane. It is a sulfur-containing compound that occurs in animals, humans, and many plants and can also be produced in a laboratory. MSM is used in oral supplements and topical products, but product format does not establish efficacy. Oral and topical MSM also require separate evaluation because findings from one formulation cannot automatically be transferred to another.

WebMD describes positive hair-growth findings in mice while emphasizing that human studies are needed. Its overview does not establish that oral or topical MSM promotes human hair growth, and the evidence reviewed here does not identify convincing human trials reporting outcomes such as greater hair count, improved density, faster growth, reduced shedding, or regrowth in balding areas (WebMD’s medically reviewed MSM overview).

That does not prove MSM can never help anyone. It means the claimed benefit has not been demonstrated. This distinction matters when deciding whether a supplement is worth buying, particularly if using it could delay investigation of persistent or unusual hair loss.

Safety and efficacy must also be separated. A quantity that many people may tolerate is not necessarily a quantity that grows hair. General dosing statements cannot be turned into a hair regimen without evidence connecting a particular dose and duration to measured human results.

Why MSM is marketed for hair—and why the rationale is not proof

Because MSM contains sulfur and hair contains sulfur-bearing components, marketers can build an intuitively appealing story: MSM supplies sulfur, and hair contains sulfur, so MSM should support hair growth.

The missing step is evidence that taking or applying MSM changes the growth of human hair. A biologically plausible explanation is a reason to investigate a treatment, not proof that it works. Connective-tissue language likewise does not demonstrate that follicles produce more hair.

One retail example illustrates the distinction. An Amazon listing markets Nutricology 500 mg MSM capsules for hair, skin, nails, and joint support. It emphasizes “bioavailable sulfur” and connective-tissue support but provides no human hair-growth trial or measured outcome demonstrating that the capsules improve density, growth rate, shedding, or regrowth (the marketplace listing for the 500 mg capsules).

Different kinds of information answer different questions:

  • A product title shows how an item is positioned.
  • A manufacturer benefit statement shows its proposed rationale.
  • A customer rating records marketplace feedback from a particular group of buyers.
  • A controlled human trial can test whether a product changes a defined outcome compared with a suitable control.

Only the last category can directly support a clinical hair-growth claim. Sulfur language, connective-tissue claims, and customer reviews cannot substitute for measured results.

Hair quality is not the same as hair growth

Hair research can examine the appearance and physical characteristics of existing shafts without showing that more hair is growing. That distinction is especially important when interpreting animal research involving coat quality.

A useful human study would define its participants and type of hair loss, use an appropriate control, and measure outcomes that matter to the buyer. Depending on the claim, those outcomes might include standardized hair counts, density, growth rate, shedding, or regrowth.

Change from baseline is not enough by itself. If a treatment group improves between the beginning and end of a study, the control group may have improved as well. The more informative question is whether the difference between groups is sufficiently large and reliable to support the claimed effect.

The same caution applies to hair sulfur. Finding more sulfur in sampled hair does not demonstrate that follicles produced hair faster, density increased, or shedding declined. Composition, shaft quality, and follicle activity are related concepts, but they are not interchangeable outcomes.

What the 65-day poodle study actually found

The most directly relevant study in the reviewed research was a randomized feeding experiment involving 32 adult poodles. It lasted 65 days and divided the dogs into four groups of eight:

  1. Basal diet only
  2. Basal diet with 0.2% MSM
  3. Basal diet with 0.2% myo-inositol
  4. Basal diet with 0.2% MSM plus 0.2% myo-inositol

These study-design details and concentrations come from the full poodle feeding study. The experiment examined hair-quality characteristics and other biological measures. It was not a human hair-loss trial, did not treat alopecia, and did not directly establish new-hair growth.

At day 65, hair-scale thickness was lower than control in the myo-inositol group and the combined MSM-plus-myo-inositol group—not in the MSM-alone group. Hair sulfur increased from baseline in the myo-inositol and combination groups, but this does not by itself establish superiority over control or demonstrate increased growth. The reported results did not show a significant direct hair-quality advantage for MSM alone over control.

The combination result is also difficult to interpret for MSM specifically. When two ingredients are administered together, any observed effect could come from one ingredient, the other ingredient, their interaction, or unrelated variation. It cannot be assigned to MSM alone without a comparison that supports that conclusion.

Several limitations restrict what consumers can infer:

  • The subjects were dogs, not people.
  • Each treatment group contained only eight animals.
  • The study lasted 65 days.
  • It assessed coat-quality characteristics rather than clinically meaningful human hair-growth outcomes.
  • Authors disclosed affiliations with a diet manufacturer and a trading company.
  • The stronger reported hair findings involved myo-inositol or the combination, not MSM alone.

The study’s 0.2% concentration describes a proportion of poodle feed. It should not be converted into a human capsule or powder dose. Species, diet, body size, metabolism, formulation, and study objective all differ.

There is no established MSM dose or timeline for human hair growth

The evidence does not establish an effective human MSM dose for hair, nor does it establish how long someone would need to take or apply MSM before expecting a result. A retail serving direction can show how a product is sold, but it cannot fill that evidence gap.

Consider the label arithmetic for a retail product containing 500 mg of MSM per capsule:

The cited marketplace listing suggests taking one to three capsules one to five times daily. With 500 mg in each capsule, that produces a broad label range of 500 to 7,500 mg per day. This is marketplace product guidance—not a validated hair-growth regimen.

WebMD states that most people can safely take up to 4 grams daily while noting that ideal condition-specific doses have not been established. Four grams equals eight of the example 500 mg capsules. The retail listing’s maximum of 15 capsules supplies 7,500 mg, which is 3,500 mg above that general amount.

The 4-gram statement is not:

  • A proven hair-growth dose
  • A regulatory upper intake limit
  • A guarantee of safety for every individual
  • Evidence of long-term safety
  • A reason to increase intake when hair does not improve

There is likewise no evidence-based trial period to recommend. Without a validated human regimen, promises that MSM should work within a particular number of weeks or months are not grounded in demonstrated hair-growth outcomes.

Safety checks before trying MSM

WebMD lists diarrhea, constipation, and upset stomach as possible mild adverse effects. It also identifies possible interactions involving warfarin and other anticoagulants, NSAIDs, and herbal supplements, although its guidance does not quantify how often these interactions occur or how severe they may be. WebMD advises avoiding MSM during pregnancy or nursing because adequate safety information is unavailable and notes that supplement quality and active-ingredient content can vary (WebMD’s MSM safety guidance).

Anyone taking medicines or several supplements should ask a clinician or pharmacist to review the complete combination. A retail label may not account for personal medical history, duplicate ingredients, or the cumulative dose supplied by multiple products.

Absence of established harm is not the same as evidence of safety. General tolerability statements do not guarantee safety for a particular person, combination of products, or period of use.

Marketplace availability, polished benefit statements, and customer reviews also do not establish consistent active-ingredient content. When comparing products, look for a clearly stated MSM amount per serving and credible quality information. Do not assume that a named item is pure, accurately labeled, independently tested, or effective unless appropriate evidence supports those claims.

Before use:

  • Review all medicines and supplements for possible interactions.
  • Avoid MSM during pregnancy or nursing.
  • Check whether the stated amount applies per capsule or per multi-capsule serving.
  • Calculate the complete daily intake across every dose and product.
  • Do not raise the dose simply because hair results are absent.
  • Stop and seek professional advice if adverse effects occur.

The poodle research measured coat quality, broad retail directions do not establish a therapeutic dose, and general tolerability guidance does not provide an effective timeline or expected regrowth benefit.

The sound buying decision is to treat MSM as an unproven hair supplement—not as a substitute for finding out why hair loss is occurring. If you still choose to try it, review the complete daily dose, medications, other supplements, pregnancy or nursing status, and possible gastrointestinal effects with a qualified clinician.
